Debate Night

At our church tonight we held a forum for Backyard Skeptics, and their panel of atheists. We had our couple of Christian guys up there holding our side of the debate.
It’s an interesting thing, sitting in on a religious debate. I found it just a tad frustrating. Question and answer time is always great because you never know what you’re going to get. You have the angry atheist posturing and spitting into the mic, while there’s always a believer who wants to keep preaching and won’t sit down. I’m always alternating between wanting to stand up and give my own rebuttal, and scrunching down in my seat while a well meaning brother remains a little too persistent.
I get it. We all want to get our point across. We all wish to be persuasive. However, I think Christians forget, in the heat of a debate, that it’s the love of God that brings people to repentance, and the atheists forget that a great number of believers are intelligent people who don’t need to be reminded to be smart and to think through things. So, the skeptics come off as condescending and judgemental, and the Christians come off sometimes as the same. Bummer. We have that in common.
If you ever get a chance to sit in on one of these, I encourage you to. It’s energizing.
Be blessed.

Glad you were blessed by it! I heard it was frustrating also, yes, a bummer when as Christians we come off as condescending & judgemental…no place for that. It is His kindness that leads us to repentance…so true Audra!
