Satan is Real

The very first time we read of Satan’s appearance is in chapter 3 of Genesis, just following the Creation of the world. Reminding me of when my son used to follow his big sister around just to sabotage and break an ornate Lego masterpiece, Satan was following along after God for a chance to ruin this paradise. In this scene, he’s transformed himself into a serpent to trick Adam and Eve.

But this isn’t the first time Satan walks in on stage left.  Like a shoot-em-up guy movie with a ’48 hours earlier’ font etched on the left bottom corner of the screen, we are allowed the rewind, to ‘see’ the history of what I call The Not-So-Smart Rebellion. Satan, an angel from God’s own troops, gets kicked out of Heaven. But like an unoriginal script, he helps Adam and Eve get themselves kicked out of the Garden.

Although we have no idea how much earlier this happened in Heaven than when we see him again in the garden, the most beautiful angel was thrown down from the most beautiful place in existence, Heaven. In Isaiah 14 the Bible gives us a glimpse of what happened, an embarrassing oration of an incomprehensible audacity. Revelation 12 verse 7 starts out like a bestseller. “And war broke out in Heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor was there place in Heaven any longer. So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the Earth and his angels were cast out with him.” Later in verse 12 it states, ” Woe to the inhabitants of the Earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows he has a short time.”

We learn a couple of things from these passages of scripture. 1) Satan was once an angel, and lived in Heaven. 2) Satan was on the losing side of a war. 3) He, and his comrades, the fallen angels who followed him in allegiance, were cast here, to Earth. With you and me, and he’s not happy about it.

Great. Thanks Lord. But what happened? Why go to war? There wasn’t weapons of mass destruction. It’s Heaven! The Old Testament book of Isaiah fills us in verse 12 of chapter 14. “How you are fallen from Heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, you who weakened the nations! For you have said in your heart: I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God;…I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.”
Yikes. Last I checked, God hadn’t been looking for resumes. He wasn’t filling out a profile on LinkedIn or Monster, looking for a replacement. Satan’s heart was full of pride, wanting them to bow to him. I can picture him screaming mad, “I GOT THIS! DIE!”, but the loyal angels of Heaven were armed and ready to defend their home. “Get over yourself,” Michael might have said, in a calm yet urgent voice filled with hurt over the betrayal. At one time they had all been a family.

Yeah, my version is fiction, but doesn’t it allow you to see them more distinctly? Angels are created beings, but like us, given a choice to rebel, or live their lives loyal to the One true God.
Satan is real. Those who stupidly followed him in the heavenly rebellion we call demons. They are literally Hell-bent on destroying people. Why? I’ll get into that tomorrow.

These are not the only biblical accounts of who and what Satan became. I started with the history. There are a great many verses warning and admonishing those who have ears to hear to become prepared. Here are a few Ive found. He’s named the Accuser, the Deceiver, the Devil, the Adversary, Father of Lies, ruler of darkness, Prince of the power of the air, an angel of light, evil one, murderer, serpent of old, the tempter, Abaddon, Apollyon, Beelzebub, prince of demons, and so on and so forth add nausea!

There are many Christians who will think it unwise to write about this. That somehow educating ourselves on this kind of spiritual darkness gives credence and glory. I disagree. What would happen to our military if when people signed up they were told to find a bunk and get comfortable because there’s no real enemy on any near horizon? Then, that soldier was given a uniform, but no exercise, a title, but no tools, and weapons, but no training? Little good it would do for any of us. If there’s an enemy, you want to know about it. Especially an unseen one who lives where you do.
If there is anything to take away from this note today, it’s this :
Satan is real. He wants to destroy your life. He was a created being who was evicted from Heaven. He is now #1 on God’s list of terrorists. You need God because He’s bigger, because He made Satan, and will destroy him one day.
Until tomorrow. Praying for you.
